Your application calls for a custom magnetic solution. Here’s how you can get exactly the magnet design you need to maximize efficiency and drive profits.

Custom magnets for your custom application

Industrial applications don’t always follow the same standard, and your process may call for custom magnets to get the job done right.

Your business shouldn’t be excluded from the service-oriented approach businesses with more standardized applications get.

We run a custom magnet machining shop where we can manufacture and assemble the perfect solution for your job. So you get the right magnet and the elevated service our team is renowned for.

How do we build your custom solution?

We do it all in our fully-equipped onsite manufacturing and assembly facility.

Take a look.

Techniques commonly used by metalworkers are modified and adapted to create special design features or meet specified tolerances in the magnetic material you need.

We regularly fill orders from design engineers requesting unique features, including:

  • Blind holes.
  • Retaining shoulders.
  • Tapers.
  • Counter-sinks.
  • Special shapes.

But magnetic materials are brittle, and customizing them can be tough. Most suppliers just can’t do it. Or can’t do it well enough to guarantee the quality of your outcome.

How do we do it properly?

Three factors allow us to give you a better custom product than other providers.

  • We know the materials inside and out.
  • We invest in the right equipment.
  • We invest in the right training.

Custom alnico magnets are made from a cast of aluminum, nickel, cobalt and iron.

The casting process gets close to your final product, with only extremely detailed feature requiring hands-on shaping.

Sintered alnico is less common but may allow us to integrate more intricate features into the magnet without additional manual labour.

Both type of custom alnico magnet are shaped using grinding wheels, core drills, or electrical discharge machining.

Custom neodymium magnets are usually sintered into blocks or discs.  Depending on your requirements, however, bonded neodymium iron boron magnets might be better. They come from combining magnetic powder with a non-magnetic binder and can be machine-shaped however you need.

Grinding neodymium magnets creates pyrophoric dust, if your manufacturer doesn’t keep the magnet properly cooled during the process, your final product will be weaker than your requested strength. so it is imperative to keep the magnets cool during machining.

Most of the time, we process neodymium magnets before magnetizing them, to avoid any negative impacts on your final product. Completing the fabrication steps in this order minimizes the potential harm done by the build-up of heat, which adversely affects the magnetic properties of many alloys.

Samarium Cobalt is particularly brittle, so your custom SmCo magnet requires more precise manufacturing control than other materials.

Ceramic magnets are similarly brittle, so diamond tooling is likely the best bet for your custom magnet.

Electromagnets are a more involved process, and we need to know more about your application to talk with any certainty about how your magnet will be custom built.

Why not give us a call to talk about your application and the best way to get the magnets you need within your budget?

We’re always up to the challenge of crafting a totally unique custom magnet for your custom application. Get in touch with us today!
