Rare Earth Magnet

Find a Rare Earth Magnet

A Rare Earth magnet is the strongest type of permanent magnet currently made. In fact, it is substantially stronger than ferrite and alnico magnets. While ferrite and ceramic magnets have a magnetic field of 5 to 100 milliteslas, a rare earth magnet can typically generate a field of more than 1200 milliteslas. Because of its brittle nature, a rare earth magnet is prone to chipping and breaking. To prevent this, it is usually coated with nickel. This nickel coating also makes it resistant to corrosion.

The most common rare earth magnets are the Neodymium-Iron-Boron and Samarium Cobalt types. Neodymium-Iron-Boron magnets are the strongest. However, at temperatures close to 150C and above, and depending on the magnetic circuits, Samarium Cobalt magnets can be stronger than Neodymium magnets.

At Jobmaster Magnets, you can find both Neodymium and Samarium Cobalt rare earth magnets. Neodymium magnets, offered in grades exceeding 50 MGOe, are preferred when you are looking for something with maximum energy. They are available in blocks, discs and rings. Samarium Cobalt magnets, on the other hand, may not be as strong as Neodymium, but they exhibit better performance at higher temperatures. They are more expensive than Neodymium, and are your best choice when you need a combination of power and high resistance. Jobmaster Magnets stocks Samarium Cobalt rare earth magnets in small blocks and discs. However, larger blocks and rings can also be made available.
